Gildan 5000: The Full Range (Fits-Chest Circumference)
Gildan publishes fits-chest circumference, the body measurement the shirt is built to fit, taken around the fullest part of the chest. This is the baseline chart most of the blank apparel industry works from.

Two cells say "not verified" because we only print numbers confirmed against official charts or our verified guides. Gildan XL sits between L at 42-44 and 2XL at 50-52. Bella+Canvas 3001: Laid-Flat Widths
Bella+Canvas publishes laid-flat body width, the shirt measured lying on a table. Double the width for an approximate chest circumference. Verified rows from the official 3001 measurement spec:

The S, L, XL, and 2XL rows are omitted rather than estimated, same rule as above. The spec runs 16.5 inches flat at XS up to 32 inches flat at 5XL, and Bella+Canvas cuts slim, so buyers between sizes usually go up one.
Comfort Colors 1717: Laid-Flat With Tolerance
Comfort Colors also publishes laid flat, and its official sheet states a 2 inch tolerance on both dimensions because the shirts are garment-dyed after construction. Verified rows: S at 17.5 inches flat, M at 19.5 flat with a 28 inch length, 3XL at 27 flat with a 32.5 length, and 4XL at 29 flat with a 33.5 length. Expect shirt-to-shirt variance inside that tolerance, it is normal for the brand.
What About XXS?
Standard adult unisex blanks do not come in XXS. Bella+Canvas and Next Level start at XS, and Gildan, Hanes, and Comfort Colors start at S. If an adult XS is still too big, the practical answer is the youth range: a youth XL fits a 34 to 36 inch chest, the same chest as adult small but with a 3 inch shorter body, and smaller youth sizes step down from there. Fits-Chest vs Laid-Flat: Do Not Mix Them
The single most common chart-reading mistake is comparing a Gildan number to a Bella+Canvas number directly. Gildan's 50-52 at 2XL describes the body it fits. Bella+Canvas's 28 at 3XL describes the garment on a table. To compare, double the flat number first: 28 flat is about 56 around. Gildan carries the widest standard adult range, S through 5XL. Bella+Canvas and Next Level run XS through 3XL in standard stock, with Bella+Canvas publishing 4XL and 5XL specs for the 3001. Comfort Colors and Hanes run S through 3XL standard, with Comfort Colors publishing a 4XL spec. 2XL is the last size every major brand stocks, which is why mixed group orders usually cap there unless someone specifically needs larger, and why plus-size orders usually land on Gildan.
