XXL is the same size as 2XL, and in Gildan's official chart it fits a 50 to 52 inch chest with a 32 inch body length. The two labels are just two ways of printing the same size, exactly like XXXL and 3XL. The exact measurements shift by brand, and two of the big five brands publish their charts in a different measurement style entirely. Every verified number is below.
XXL vs 2XL: Same Size, Two Labels
Some brands print "XXL" on the tag and others print "2XL," but within any given brand they mean the identical shirt. The X-count style and the number style never describe different fits. This matters when you order from two suppliers at once: match the chest measurement, not the label format. The same rule holds one size up, where XXXL equals 3XL and XXXXL equals 4XL.
Gildan 5000 XXL (2XL) Measurements
Gildan publishes fits-chest circumference, meaning the range describes the body the shirt is built to fit, measured around the fullest part of the chest. Here is 2XL with its neighbors for context.
| Size | Fits-Chest Circumference (in) | Body Length (in) | Sleeve Length (in) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gildan L | 42-44 | not verified | not verified |
| Gildan 2XL (XXL) | 50-52 | 32 | 21.5 |
| Gildan 3XL (XXXL) | 54-56 | 33 | 22.88 |
One honest note: Gildan XL sits between L and 2XL, and we have not verified its exact range against the current official chart for this article, so it is left out of the table rather than guessed. If you are deciding between XL and 2XL, measure the chest and ask us to confirm the XL range before you order.
Bella+Canvas and Comfort Colors: Read Their Numbers Differently
Bella+Canvas and Comfort Colors publish laid-flat body width instead of fits-chest circumference. Laid flat means the shirt is measured lying on a table, so you double the number for an approximate circumference. Their nearest verified anchors to 2XL: Bella+Canvas 3001 measures 20 inches flat at M (about 40 around) and 28 inches flat at 3XL (about 56 around). Comfort Colors 1717 measures 19.5 inches flat at M and 27 inches flat at 3XL, with a 2 inch tolerance stated on its official sheet because the shirts are garment-dyed after construction.
Both brands stock 2XL in their standard adult range, but their exact 2XL widths were not verified against current manufacturer sheets for this article, so we are not printing those cells. If you need Bella+Canvas or Comfort Colors in 2XL, ask us to confirm the current spec before your order goes to print.
Who Fits a 2XL
Using Gildan's chart, 2XL fits a chest measuring 50 to 52 inches around. If your chest tapes at 48 to 49 inches you are likely between XL and 2XL, and if it tapes at 53 or more you should look at 3XL and up. Fit style matters too: Gildan runs boxy and forgiving, Bella+Canvas runs slim so many buyers size up, and Comfort Colors runs relaxed with its built-in tolerance. The deciding number is always the tape measure, not the size you wear in another brand.
To get that number right, wrap a soft tape around the fullest part of the chest, under the arms, level and snug but not tight. Full walkthrough here: how to measure your chest for a t-shirt.
2XL Availability by Brand
All five brands we print on most stock an adult 2XL: Gildan (adult range S through 5XL), Bella+Canvas (XS through 3XL standard, with 4XL and 5XL published for the 3001), Comfort Colors (S through 3XL standard, 4XL published), Next Level (XS through 3XL), and Hanes (S through 3XL). 2XL is the last size that every major blank brand carries, which makes it the safe top size on mixed team orders. Past 2XL the brand list narrows fast, which is covered in our XXXL and XXXXL chart.
Printing on 2XL Shirts
Most print shops, ours included, charge a small upcharge on 2XL and up because the blanks cost more. Artwork also reads differently on a wider shirt: a 10 inch front print sized for a medium can look undersized on a 2XL, so we scale designs proportionally on every custom order.
What size is XXL?
XXL is the same as 2XL. In Gildan's official chart it fits a 50 to 52 inch chest with a 32 inch body length and a 21.5 inch sleeve. Bella+Canvas and Comfort Colors measure laid flat instead, and their exact 2XL widths were not verified for this article.
Is XXL bigger than XL?
Yes, XXL is one full size up from XL. In Gildan's chart, L fits 42-44 inches and 2XL fits 50-52 inches, with XL between them. Measure your chest and match the number rather than guessing between neighboring sizes.

What chest measurement fits 2XL?
A 50 to 52 inch chest fits Gildan 2XL. Measure around the fullest part of the chest with a soft tape, level and snug. If you measure 53 inches or more, move up to 3XL.
Is 2XL the same in every brand?
No. Gildan 2XL runs boxy at 50-52 fits-chest. Bella+Canvas cuts slimmer and Comfort Colors cuts relaxed with a 2 inch tolerance, and both publish laid-flat widths rather than fits-chest ranges. The label matches but the fit does not, so always check the brand's own chart.
