Toddler sizes (2T through 5T/6T) and youth sizes (YXS through YXL) are two separate sizing systems with different proportions. The transition from toddler to youth usually happens around ages 4 to 5, when kids outgrow the widest toddler size and are ready for the slimmer, longer proportions of youth shirts. But most people asking "what size is youth XL" are really asking: what does it convert to in adult sizing? The answer is adult small. Youth XL in Adult Sizing: The Conversion Brand Youth XL Chest...

Youth small does not have a direct adult equivalent. It is a child-specific size that sits three full sizes below the start of adult sizing. A youth small measures 26 to 30 inches in the chest depending on the brand, while the smallest adult size (adult XS or adult small) starts at 30 to 34 inches. There is no adult shirt that matches youth small.
