Toddler to Youth Sizes: When to Make the Switch

size transition sizing toddler sizing toddler to youth youth sizing

Toddler sizes (2T through 5T/6T) and youth sizes (YXS through YXL) are two separate sizing systems with different proportions. The transition from toddler to youth usually happens around ages 4 to 5, when kids outgrow the widest toddler size and are ready for the slimmer, longer proportions of youth shirts.

Toddler vs Youth: Side by Side

Size Chest (in) Body Length (in) Neck Opening Sleeve Style Fits Ages
2T 20-21 14 Wide (snap or stretch) Short, wide 2
3T 21-22 15 Wide Short, wide 3
4T 22-23 15.5 Wide Short, wide 4
5T 22-23 16 Wide Short, wide 4-5
6T (where available) 23-24 17 Moderate Short, wide 5-6
Youth XS 24-26 18 Narrow (adult style) Proportioned 4-5
Youth S 28-30 20 Narrow Proportioned 6-7

The overlap between toddler 5T/6T and youth XS is where the transition happens. In the chest, they are close (22-24 inches for toddler vs 24-26 inches for youth XS in Gildan). But the proportions are different in four key ways.

Four Differences Between Toddler and Youth Shirts

1. Neck opening. Toddler shirts have wide neck openings (sometimes with snaps) to make it easy to pull over a toddler's head. Youth shirts have narrower, adult-style necklines. If your child fusses when you pull shirts over their head, they may prefer the wider toddler neck opening even if their chest fits youth XS.

2. Body length relative to width. Toddler shirts are cut wider relative to their length. A toddler 5T might measure 23 inches in the chest with only a 16-inch body length. Youth XS measures 24-26 inches in the chest with an 18-inch body length. Youth shirts are proportionally longer and narrower.

3. Sleeve shape. Toddler sleeves are short and wide, designed for chubby toddler arms. Youth sleeves are shaped like miniature adult sleeves, narrower and more proportioned to a school-age arm.

4. Fabric weight and softness. Many toddler shirts use softer, lighter fabric because parents prioritize comfort for younger children. Youth blanks from brands like Gildan use the same fabric weight as their adult line (5.3 oz for Heavy Cotton). The shirt will feel sturdier and slightly stiffer than what a toddler is used to wearing.

When to Make the Switch

Switch from toddler to youth sizing when any of these are true:

The child's chest exceeds 24 inches. At that point, most toddler sizes are too tight across the chest, and youth XS is the natural next step.

The toddler shirt is too short in the body. If a 5T is riding above the belly button, the child has outgrown toddler length. Youth XS adds 2 inches of body length.

The child is starting kindergarten. Most kindergartners fit youth XS or youth small. If the school orders custom shirts, they will be in youth sizes, not toddler sizes.

The Tricky Overlap (Ages 4-5)

Ages 4 and 5 are the gray zone. Some kids this age still fit 5T perfectly. Others have outgrown it and need youth XS. And some are big enough for youth small.

The deciding factor is the chest measurement. Measure the child's chest (or measure a shirt that fits) and match to the chart:

Under 23 inches: Toddler 5T still fits.

23 to 25 inches: Youth XS in boxy brands, youth small in slim brands.

Over 25 inches: Youth small across all brands.

Ordering Custom Shirts for Pre-K and Kindergarten

If you are ordering custom shirts for a pre-K class or kindergarten group, expect a mix of toddler and youth sizes. Not every 4-5 year old has made the transition yet.

The problem: most custom apparel brands (Gildan, Bella+Canvas, Hanes) do not make toddler sizes. Their smallest size is youth XS. If you have kids who still need toddler sizes, you either size them into youth XS (which will be slightly oversized but wearable) or source toddler blanks separately from a brand like Rabbit Skins that specializes in infant and toddler apparel.

For most pre-K and kindergarten orders, putting the smaller kids in youth XS is the practical solution. A slightly oversized youth XS on a 4-year-old looks fine, especially for event and spirit wear. For the full team ordering breakdown, see our youth sports team sizing guide and our school sizing guide.

When should kids switch from toddler to youth sizes?

Most kids transition from toddler to youth sizing between ages 4 and 5, when their chest exceeds 24 inches or toddler 5T becomes too short. The first youth size (youth XS) fits a 24-26 inch chest with an 18-inch body length. If the child's chest is under 23 inches, toddler sizes still fit.

What comes after toddler 5T?

Youth extra small (YXS) is the next size after toddler 5T in the custom apparel world. Some retail brands offer 6T, but most blank shirt brands jump straight from toddler to youth XS. Youth XS measures 24-26 inches in the chest with an 18-inch body length. See our Youth Extra Small guide for the full breakdown.

Is toddler 5T the same as youth XS?

No. Toddler 5T measures about 22-23 inches in the chest with a 16-inch body length. Youth XS measures 24-26 inches in the chest with an 18-inch body length. Youth XS is wider and longer, with a narrower neck opening and differently proportioned sleeves. They are different garments designed for different stages of growth.

Do Gildan and Hanes make toddler sizes?

No. Gildan and Hanes youth lines start at youth XS. For toddler blanks (2T through 5T/6T), look at Rabbit Skins, which is actually a Gildan sub-brand that specializes in infant and toddler apparel. The fabric and print quality are comparable to Gildan youth.
