Youth XS vs 5T: What's the Difference?

Youth XS and 5T are not the same size. 5T measures 22-23 inches at the chest with a 16 inch body length, a wide toddler-style neck, and short, wide sleeves. Youth XS measures 24-26 inches at the chest with an 18 inch body length, a narrower adult-style neck, and proportioned sleeves. Youth XS is the next size up after 5T, built for a different stage of growth, not just a bigger version of the same shirt.

Youth XS vs 5T: Side by Side

This table pulls straight from our toddler to youth size transition guide. For the full breakdown of every size in between, that guide covers the complete range from 2T through youth small.

Size Chest (in) Body Length (in) Neck Style Sleeve Style Typical Ages
4T 22-23 15.5 Wide, toddler cut Short and wide 3-4
5T 22-23 16 Wide, toddler cut Short and wide 4-5
6T 23-24 17 Wide, toddler cut Short and wide 5-6
Youth XS 24-26 18 Narrow, adult-style Proportioned, mini adult 4-5
Youth S 28-30 20 Narrow, adult-style Proportioned, mini adult 6-7

Notice that 4T and 5T share the same chest range, 22-23 inches, and only differ by half an inch of body length. Youth XS jumps 1-3 inches in chest width and 2 full inches in body length over 5T. That is a real size change, not a small step.

Four Cut Differences Between 5T and Youth XS

Neck opening: Toddler sizes like 5T use a wider neck opening built for a toddler's proportionally larger head relative to body size. Youth XS uses a narrower, adult-style neck that sits closer to the collarbone.

Proportions: Toddler shirts are cut wider relative to their length, since toddlers carry more width through the torso relative to height. Youth shirts are cut with adult-style proportions, longer relative to the chest width.

Sleeve shape: 5T sleeves are short and wide to fit a toddler's arm shape. Youth XS sleeves are proportioned like a mini adult sleeve, narrower and set differently at the shoulder.

Fabric weight: Toddler tees are typically a lighter, softer knit sized for smaller frames. Youth-size Gildan shirts use the same 5.3 oz cotton as their adult shirts, so moving from a toddler tee into a youth shirt is a jump in fabric weight, not just a jump in size.

When to Switch From 5T to Youth XS

Switch out of 5T once the chest measures over 24 inches, since that exceeds the top of the 5T range. Also switch if 5T shirts are riding up and showing midriff, since that means the body length has run out before the chest has. For kindergarten class shirts, team shirts, or any custom group order for 5 year olds, plan on youth-size blanks. Custom apparel printers size kindergarten orders as youth, not toddler, in almost every case.

The Ages 4-5 Gray Zone

Ages 4 and 5 are where 5T and youth XS overlap the most, so here are the decision rules. If the chest measures under 23 inches, stay in 5T. If the chest measures 23-25 inches, choose youth XS for a boxier fit or youth S for a slimmer fit, depending on brand. If the chest measures over 25 inches, go with youth S. When in doubt, measure the chest before you order rather than sizing off age alone.

The Custom-Order Reality

Here is something worth knowing before you order shirts for a preschool or kindergarten group: Gildan, Bella+Canvas, and Hanes do not make toddler sizes at all. Their smallest blank is youth XS. If you need an actual 5T or smaller toddler cut, Rabbit Skins, a Gildan sub-brand, is the one that covers toddler blanks. For most group orders that include a mix of 4 and 5 year olds, a slightly oversized youth XS is the practical answer, since it keeps the whole group on one consistent blank instead of splitting the order across brands. For the full range of options and where each brand fits in, see our youth extra small size guide.

If your group spans older kids too, our what size shirt for a 6 year old and what size shirt for a 7 year old guides cover the sizes just above this range. And if you are converting a kids' retail size into a shirt size, our youth size to kids size conversion chart walks through that separately.

How to Measure Before You Choose

Wrap a soft tape measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping it level and snug but not tight, then compare that number to the chart above. Body length matters too, especially in the 5T to youth XS gray zone, so measure from the highest point of the shoulder down to the hem of a shirt that currently fits well. Is 5T the same as youth XS?

No. 5T fits a 22-23 inch chest with a 16 inch body length, a wide toddler neck, and short wide sleeves. Youth XS fits a 24-26 inch chest with an 18 inch body length, a narrower adult-style neck, and proportioned sleeves. Youth XS is a full size larger and cut differently.

What size comes after 5T?

Youth XS is the next size up after 5T. Some brands also list a 6T toddler size in between, chest 23-24 inches, but many blank apparel brands jump straight from toddler sizes into youth XS as the smallest youth cut.

Can a 5 year old wear youth XS?

Yes, many 5 year olds wear youth XS, especially once their chest measures over 23-24 inches. It will run slightly loose on a smaller 5 year old, but that makes it a practical, safe choice for group orders where sizing every child individually is not realistic.

Do Gildan or Hanes make 5T shirts?

No. Gildan, Bella+Canvas, and Hanes do not make toddler sizes, including 5T. Their smallest blank is youth XS. Rabbit Skins, a Gildan sub-brand, is the brand that covers toddler sizes like 5T.
